What is the difference between NIST SHA3-256 and Ethereum Keccak-256?
NIST added a 2-bit domain separation padding (01) to the standard SHA-3 specification. Ethereum was deployed before the final standard was ratified, so Ethereum uses the original Keccak-256 without the domain separation padding.
Is SHA-3 safer than SHA-2?
Both are considered completely secure. SHA-3 provides architectural diversity: if a breakthrough mathematical attack were found on SHA-2, SHA-3 would remain unaffected.
